I feel so fortunate right now that my oldest son, 17, is alive. He was involved in a wreck last night that could have been fatal. In fact, more than one person has said they could not believe both the driver and the passenger walked away from this. We hope there will be no long-term neurologic consequences for either boy.

They Were Wearing Seatbelts

We are very, very thankful that our son and his best friend were both wearing their seatbelts. We are very thankful that no other drivers were involved or hurt. We are thankful that there was no alcohol involved. The seatbelts absolutely saved their lives. Without them, I believe both boys would have died. We were shown other cars that were not as damaged as the one my son was in, but in the other cars the occuptants were killed. The difference was that my son and his friend had their seatbelts on!

This image shows the driver's side. The piece of metal bent in was once the frame around the window. It's hard to make out, but it is bent in to near where the driver's head would be. How did these boys walk away?

This image shows my son's side.

It's a pretty short car now.

The car was airborne according to witnesses and the boys' own story, and the car flipped at least three times, taking out two medium trees. They missed the telephone pole, thankfully. The rear wheel assembly broke, one tire in the back was completely gone, and the gas tank was punctured upon landing. We were told the car could have exploded, and that it is really a mystery why it did not. I think I know why. ;-)

This image shows how short the car is now, as evidenced by my 7-year-old standing by its side. Doesn't leave much room for sitting inside!
