The Animal Studied This Week At The Healthy Homeschool is The Duck! Or, as Joseph says, The Duckie! As part of our Five In A Row study this week, we are learning about ducks. We have learned about their varied diet, which includes insects, worms, slugs, small shellfish, snails, grasses, and other plants that grow around the water's edge.

We have learned that most domesticated ducks are bred from mallards. The Pekin duck, when it is small (a duckling), is a yellow color, but when it gets more mature it turns white. The Pekin duck was brought here from China. The Mallard is colored differently from the Pekin duck. The adult male Mallard (drake) is green on the top of his head, he has a white "collar," and his body feathers are brown. The female adult Mallard (hen) is a mottled brown.

Read what we are reading if you want a good book: Make Way For Ducklings by Robert McCloskey. For another good story about a duck try The Story About Ping by Marjorie Flack.

How about some bird jokes?

What does a duck like to eat?

Cheese and quackers!

A little boy goes into a pet store. He asks the clerk if he can have some bird seed.

The clerk says, "How many birds do you have?"

The little boy says, "None yet, I want to grow some!!"
