Sherlock Holmes Study

"Holmes, you have the ears of a hawk!"

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has been one of my favorite authors for over 20. I should have discovered him sooner, but I don't recall ever hearing him discussed during the years of my public school education. Thankfully, I decided to give him a go right after the birth of my first son. Being a newborn, little Daniel was keeping me up all hours of the night. I made a trip to the library and picked up an armload of books to have something to do while I was up rocking and nursing my new baby. One of the books happened to be a treasury of Sherlock Holmes stories. I was hooked. I also knew that my children would be turned on to Sherlock Holmes much earlier than I had been.

Sherlock Holmes Recommendations

While Amazon has thousands of Sherlock Holmes products, I am only going to recommend the ones we have personally used here in our home.

Sherlock Holmes Radio Mysteries

We have literally listened to these casettes until they are just about worn out! They have been carried on family trips to listen to while driving. My children have each had them in their own rooms at different times to listen to in their small casette players. The stories are indeed mysteries and some of them do have a macabre twist, but it has never been so much so that my children had bad dreams or were scared from them. In fact, I honestly think listening to these audio dramas has made all of my children more astute in their observations and judgments! And the stories are so much fun! If you have never listened to one, I think you'd enjoy it!

Sherlock Holmes Golden Age of Radio

When CD players hit the scene, I knew I had to get some Sherlock Holmes CDs. I found a boxed set, produced by Radio Spirits and available at Amazon for a great price. Amazon did not have a picture available, so I took a picture of our own worn box!

These radio shows you'll hear are dramatic! There are sound effects such as the horses' hooves in the streets, gun shots, running, screaming, etc. I really like the cassettes above (Sherlock Holmes Radio Mysteries) the best, but it is probably only because we were already used to those when we got the CD set (Sherlock Holmes Golden Age of Radio). The Golden Age of Radio CDs include the commercials from the old radio shows, which can get sort of montonous, but I can tolerate them to be able to hear the shows!

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Gold Age of Radio

If you love classical music, and especially if you love Sherlock Holmes, you'll appreciate being able to listen to the music that accompanies the Sherlock Holmes radio mysteries!

Saint Saens

You'll recognize Danse Macabre!

Listen to variations of Danse Macabre:

This is one of the books we have in our personal library. My 10th grader has been reading from this frequently lately.
