Week 4 Assignments

For this week, review is key. Tie up loose ends as far as discussion. Delve deeper into what utilitarianism really is. The education of the youth of a society can gradually change the society as a whole. Is it hard to be different and refuse to follow the masses? Would it be worth the cost?

This week can be used to catch up on work on any note cards to use for the final exam.

Dickens Style:

Dickens could always drive a point home until it was clear as a bell! In the chapter Father and Daughter, Dickens makes it abundantly clear just how consumed with "facts" Mr. Gradgrind is by showing us how little sensitivity he has toward his daughter's sensibility!

Have the student use a standard college dictionary to write the definition for:

  • disparity
  • languid
  • codicil
  • swarthy
  • spumous
  • contrive
  • simoom

Essay Question

Mr. Gradgrind's observatory looked out on Coketown. As Mr. Gradgrind is speaking with Louisa about the marriage proposal, he asks her if she is consulting the chimneys of Coketown. What do you think Mr. Gradgrind sees when he looks at Coketown? What do you think Louisa sees?

On to week 5!

Who is the "calculating boy" spoken of? Read about George Parker Bidder.
