The Best Homeschool Books

There is nothing like a book to help you find your way sometimes!! Whether you are leaning toward a Charlotte Mason education for your children, going the unschooling route, or wanting the full classical realm of knowledge put before your children in a very precise manner, a good book can be the "outline," so to speak, for the huge project you undertake when you decide to homeschool.

Here at The Healthy Homeschool, we lean heavily toward unit studies and a Charlotte Mason approach, but I also see the value of logic and Latin. I have a healthy assortment of books from which I constantly pull--sometimes for direction in how to pursue academics with my child, but sometimes just to get some encouragement to help me finish the journey!

We hope you enjoy perusing our list of the best homeschool books!"

For The Children's Sake
by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay

One of the best books available to help you establish what is fundamentally the most important thing about homeschooling--allowing education to be a celebration of life and learning how to actually live a life of value! Written from a Christian perspective and focused on the Christian meaning of life, the book helped me to think of the fundamental principles of education, no matter how you would plan the details of actually teaching an individual. As one powerful statement in the book says: "Education is a life."

Pocketful of Pinecones
by Karen Andreola

One of my favorite, favorite books! I am so glad that I found it! I think this book is one of the most necessary books in the homeschooling mother's library, especially when mom wants nature to be a part of the lessons--and that's a lot of us!! It is a beautifully written, very sweet, fictional-type story about a homeschooling mother and her decision to use nature study as a way to nurture her two children!

The Charlotte Mason Companion
by Karen Andreola

Another of my favorite books, again by Karen Andreola! This book validated what I felt was a good idea in our homeschool, even before I knew Charlotte Mason existed. This book gave me direction in my teaching and helped me develop a gentle, relaxed style while working toward academic milestones in math and writing.

The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook
by Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore

This book is considered a classic! Dr. Raymond and Mrs. Dorothy Moore have soothed many a troubled mind with their experience in homeschooling and its potential rewarding outcome! This book was a comfort to me when my second son was turning out to be a very late reader. The Moores also helped me to see the value of encouraging a child's passion for a particular subject--rock study, weather, birds, math--whatever it may be! I believe helping a child develop a lifelong love of learning is a much better way to nurture the whole child than teaching to a test for 12 years!
